Start with your actual week. A dog that fits your home should also fit the time and attention you can offer on a busy Tuesday.

Map your everyday routine

Write down who would handle walks, training and grooming, including days when you work late or travel. Note how long the dog would typically spend alone and who could help if your schedule changes.

Compare needs before appearance

Use breed information to build a shortlist around adult size, activity, coat care and typical behavior. Compare each breed against your household rather than against a list of favorites. If you rent, check your building rules before you start meeting dogs.

Meet the dog as an individual

Breed descriptions are a starting point. Ask a rescue or responsible breeder about the individual dog’s routine, behavior around people or other pets, and the support they can offer after placement. Meeting an adult dog can give you a clearer picture of its size and everyday temperament.

Plan for the years ahead

Make room in your budget for food, equipment, grooming and veterinary care. Choose a dog whose needs you can meet over time, including after a move or a change in work hours.
