A useful harness is easy to put on, fits your dog’s shape, and works for the walks you take most often. Start by checking the size chart for the exact model you are considering.
Measure for the model
Use a soft tape to measure around the widest part of the chest. Check whether the manufacturer also asks for a neck measurement or weight range. Compare those figures with the size chart, since size names can vary between brands.
Choose features for your routine
Consider how the harness goes on, where the lead attaches, and how easily the straps can be adjusted. A step-in design may be easier if your dog is uncomfortable with gear going over its head. Check the care instructions if your walks regularly involve mud or wet weather.
Check fit before heading out
Follow the manufacturer’s fitting instructions and let your dog walk around in a secure space. Check that the harness stays in place, allows natural movement and does not rub behind the front legs. If you cannot achieve a secure, comfortable fit within the adjustment range, try a different size or shape.
